Neuropsychology Research Experience

Neuropsychology is the study of brain behavior relationships using a variety of techniques (e.g., fMRI, DTI, ERP, neuropsychological testing, etc.). We are seeking an undergraduate research assistant to help conduct several studies into the etiology of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Other ongoing projects include investigations into neuropsychological correlates of white matter damage in cerebral palsy, the relationship between executive functioning and adaptive skills, and examination of the relationship between motor skills and neuropsychological test performance. Opportunities to participate in these other projects may also be available.

The assistant would become familiar with various neuropsychological measures, various pediatric disorders that result in neuropsychological dysfunction, use of SPSS, and would be introduced to techniques such as DTI. Duties would initially include data entry, data analysis, and coordinating logistics (e.g., scheduling of participants); however, as the student gains experience, development of more advanced skills such as interpretation of DTI images and experimental design would be possible. The research assistant would be welcome to participate in any of the various didactic experiences offered through the Department of Neuropsychology at Kennedy Krieger. Furthermore, students who make significant contributions to the research will be appropriately recognized with their name on any posters or publications arising from the work. Opportunities for independent research projects may also be possible depending upon interest and experience of the student.

This is an unpaid position, but the student can earn three credits of research experience. We are looking for a commitment of 10 hours/week, but specific hours are flexible. Further, ability to begin work in the summer is preferred, but we are also interested in having students for the fall and possibly spring semesters. Interested individuals should contact Dr. Adam T. Schmidt postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Neuropsychology at Kennedy Krieger Institute (schmidta@kennedykrieger.org or 443-923-4459).
